November 18, 2021: The fourth round of stimulus checks started

750,000 bonus stimulus checks worth between $600 and $1,100 were sent out this week. Eligible residents of the state of California are in line to receive these additional checks. Other states follow suit and are also making stimulus checks available.

September 14, 2021: New stimulus payments in September

Some Americans will be receiving an additional stimulus payment in September. The IRS has until the end of December 2021 to distribute the funds from the third round of Economic Impact Payments, or better known as stimulus checks.

California: Eligible Californians, around two-thirds of them, have to file a 2020 tax return with the state before 15 October in order to receive the tax rebate.

New Mexico: Over the following two months it would be sending emergency financial assistance to low-income households.

Other States: Some states around the nation more narrowly targeted portions of the population to dole out some extra cash. Some targeted those with low incomes and ITIN taxpayers. Other states and localities chose to reward their frontline workers with $1,000 bonus checks or hazard pay.

September 1, 2021: Some states are issuing their own stimulus check

The previous three stimulus checks valued at nearly $1 trillion are credited with reducing poverty and helping millions of families weather the pandemic. But with the COVID-19 Delta variant spreading across the nation, some states are also moving to distribute payments, including California, Colorado, Georgia, Florida and Maryland.

Current Information:

• IRS will look at two tax years. 2020 if already filed; 2019 if not.
• Congress could focus its stimulus efforts on tax breaks for businesses as a way to boost US job numbers.
• A $1,400 maximum single payment for individuals. Proposed by the Heroes Act passed by the House of Representatives. (This is not law. More below.)
• More money for individuals than the Heroes Act proposes, as referenced by President Donald Trump on July 1.
• A $2,000 monthly payment through the end of the pandemic and for three months after. Proposed by Sen. Kamala Harris.
• $2,000 a month for up to 12 months. Proposed by Rep. Ro Khanna.
• A $4,000 temporary travel tax credit (PDF). Proposed by the US Travel Association, after *Trump embraced the idea in May. Sen. Martha McSally took the idea further and proposed a bill (PDF) that would give couples a $8,000 tax credit to cover travel expenses plus $500 for each qualifying child.
• A payroll tax cut, proposed by Vice President Mike Pence and other White House officials, that would allow workers to keep more of their paychecks.
